About Us

Students, staff and faculty at Wilkes University who have traveled abroad had a chance to win an expense-paid trip to Dreams Punta Cana Resort and Spa in the Dominican Republic through a campus essay contest.

The Wilkes University Center for Global Education and Diversity, in conjunction with The Beacon student newspaper, the Graduate Creative Writing Program and Barnes & Noble- Wilkes/Kings, sponsored an essay contest open to all students who have participated in any type of overseas study program, including Wilkes’ own faculty-led Study Abroad Program or one of the numerous classes that take students to other countries.

Top prize winners in both categories received travel accommodations for an international excursion provided by Sundance Vacations in Wilkes-Barre. Runners-up won a free weekly café drink from Barnes & Noble-Wilkes/King’s Bookstore for one full semester or free gear. Additional prizes will be announced later.

To enter the essay contest, participants submitted a 500- to 750-word essay answering the question “What did you learn or accomplish from your experience abroad?” How did this experience change your perceptions, alter your world view or introduce you to new and interesting people and cultures in other parts of the globe? The contest has been divided into three categories:

Category 1: U.S. students at Wilkes who have studied abroad.

Category 2: International students who are studying abroad here at Wilkes.

Category 3: Faculty, graduate students and Wilkes staff who have participated in any of the Wilkes study abroad programs, or who themselves took advantage of study abroad opportunities as students, or who simply went on an international trip at any point in their lives and found the trip to be an exciting international learning experience.
